NZ Boxing Notes – 1 July 2025
Pro Heavyweights Kick Off
Niwa Barlow and Roma Crichton both enjoyed successful debut victories in June, stepping into the professional heavyweight ranks at the BX-9 Series event in Manukau City.
Keeping both fighters active for the remainder of the year would be an ideal way to build early momentum in their pro careers.
Francis Waitai on a Roll
Super middleweight Francis Waitai has quietly put together an impressive run, going 5–0–1 in his last six outings. His recent victories include wins over Mikey Helg, Tej Pratap Singh, Adrian Taihia and veteran Robert Berridge. This string of results reflects both consistency and progression.
A rematch with Andrei Mikhailovich, who handed Waitai a decision loss back in 2022, should be high on his radar as he looks to settle unfinished business. Other intriguing matchups include fellow Kiwi contenders Sam Beck, Jahzia Puohotaua or Ricaia Warren.
Waitai could also consider a trans-Tasman clash with highly regarded Australian prospect Max McIntyre, who stopped Warren in June and has been gaining momentum in the region.
With several compelling opponents in and around the division, Waitai has no shortage of options as he continues pushing toward world-level contention.
Sam Beck Mid-Year Check-In
A busy second half of 2025 would be a welcome development for Sam Beck. A rematch with Apai Cook, following their close encounter in March last year, would be a logical step.
Alternatively, a high-stakes challenge against Australian prospect Xavier Fletcher or a test against Aussie contender Blake Wells would be bold moves that could elevate Beck’s standing in the regional scene.
Rising Contenders and Potential Match-ups
Peach Boxing continues to develop some of the brightest young talents in New Zealand, with standout prospects Sonny Morini, Oliver Firth, and Keanu Naden all remaining active and sharp under the gym’s disciplined guidance. With valuable appearances under their belts, the next logical step is a gradual increase in competition, and the local scene offers plenty of intriguing options.
Sonny Morini has looked composed and clinical early in his career. A good litmus test for his current level could come against Kavana Vaotu'ua, who brings grit and pressure, or Dylan Emery, whose experience would offer a different kind of challenge.
Oliver Firth appears ready for a step up. With his blend of patience and technical sharpness, match-ups against the likes of Alex Walters or the experienced Adrian Taihia would be timely tests as he pushes toward domestic contention.
Keanu Naden, an exciting and versatile prospect, could benefit from rounds with fighters such as Joshua Francis, Benjamin Kelleher, or Sivan Hermez. Each would bring different looks and challenge Naden’s ability to adapt in the ring.
Meanwhile, Alex Mukuka, a Commonwealth Games representative, made a strong professional debut in May with a win over Ross Malthus. He has remained in camp, staying in shape while awaiting his next opportunity. A clash with former amateur rival Michael Reynolds would be a fan-friendly bout worth building toward. In the meantime, a match-up against a seasoned veteran like Nort Beauchamp, if he opts to continue his career, would offer valuable pro experience and help Mukuka solidify his foundation.
With these prospects on the cusp of bigger opportunities, the second half of 2025 could provide the proving grounds needed to shake up the national picture and give the Pound-for-Pound rankings a fresh injection of talent.
